Black Grouse Lek in Oppdal Book

Tetrao tetrix
Sigbjørn Frengen, Oppdal Safari

The black grouse lek in Oppdal can be experienced on the marshlands of Oppdal throughout April and the first half of May. This is a well-known sign of spring and a popular subject for both nature enthusiasts and photographers.

The tour begins in the evening, when we walk out to the lekking site and set up hides and camouflage. As darkness falls, calm settles over the marshes. It is not uncommon to hear owls calling from the edges of the marsh before night turns into dawn.

What can you expect from a black grouse lek experience?

The black grouse arrive at the lekking site early in the morning, often before full daylight. Activity then begins around the hides, and male birds may come very close. The guide ensures that the hide is properly positioned and prepared, allowing you to experience the lek in a safe and respectful manner.

You will spend the night and the early morning hours in the hide, before the guide returns to pick you up around 09:00.
